Shropshire union canal

Two short sections of this canal are available with IWSAA, at High Onn and Little Onn. Both offer the classic 'Shroppie' experience while each having their own unique characteristcs:

High Onn

  • Long, straight, relatively quiet pound.
  • Good clarity during the summer months; can be coloured after boat traffic.
  • Features include reed lines, the far shelf, and occasional overhanging vegetation.
  • Depth is typically 4–5 ft down the track, shallower on the far shelf.

Little Onn

  • Popular and well fished match stretch with well‑spaced pegs.
  • Known for steady roach fishing and occasional quality perch.
  • Bridges and slight bends create subtle variations in flow and depth.
  • Boat traffic can be moderate, which often improves fishing by adding colour.

Both stretches hold a very similar mix of species, with roach, perch, bream/skimmers, and chub all present, though each tends to favour particular features along the canal. Bridges create subtle depth changes, shade, and cover that naturally attract perch and chub, while reed beds often shelter roach alongside smaller perch. The far shelf provides the classic Shropshire Union contour and remains a dependable line for roach and skimmers, and the boat moorings offer warmth and structure that draw fish throughout the year, often becoming especially productive during the colder months.

A range of traditional canal baits work well here, with maggots, caster, worm, and bread punch all proving effective. Roach and skimmers typically respond best to bread punch, while perch and chub are more reliably targeted with casters and worms.
