A long 7km section of this popular canal offering both rural and urban fishing opportunities with a wide of range of fish including the usual canal favourites.
Standard canal species including Roach, Perch, Rudd, Skimmers/Bream and hybrids can be found at various locations along the canal with features such as reed beds, moored boats, bridges and marinas providing pedictable and consistent fishing.
There is also notably a small number of Tench, Chub and Carp present within the canal with a known number of Carp along the Hazelstrine stretch.
This stretch of canal is typically shallow and averages around 7 metres in width, with some wider sections reaching up to 12 metres. The water carries a slow, steady tow, making it ideal for using a pole fishing tight to the far bank or a waggler to fish alongside moored boats.
Maggots, Casters, Worm and Bread punch are all viable baits for a varirty of species
This canal tends to fish best in the more urban stretches, where the high towpath usage helps deter predatory species such as cormorants and American mink and where features such as morred boats act
as refuge points for fish. It is also most productive during the early morning and evening, when narrowboat traffic is at its quietest.
For the predator angler, this canal holds a number of large pike alongside a strong population of perch. Pike are notably encountered along the Baswich–Hazelstrine stretch, where both natural and man‑made features create refuge for small baitfish. Both deadbaits and lures are effective methods in these areas.
