Trent and mersey canal

A popular stretch of the Trent and Mersey canal to anglers, walkers and narrowboaters alike. The stretch runs from Shrugborough Lock to Bridge No 77, above Hoo Mill lock. This stretch offers a compact but varied angling environment, with features such as the junction with the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, a large Marina at Great Haywood as well as a small disused boat yard at Hoo Mill all offering holding areas and refuge for fish.

Anglers value this area for its mixed-species potential, reliable sport, and easy access. Many species of fish call this stretch home with Roach, Rudd & Perch abundant and reliable, forming the backbone of most nets.
Bream & skimmers are also present in good numbers, especially around steadier, slightly deeper sections. You may also find the occasional Carp which usually reside within Great Haywood Marina but have been known to wonder into the Canal especially during the warmer months.

Different methods shine depending on your target species and the time of year:
• Pole fishing is popular among course and match anglers looking for a mixed bag of fish,
• Waggler and light feeder tactics is also viable for targeting the larger Roach, Perch and Bream. Or when a pole isnt practial such as haywood Junction where rod and line is required to reach the far bank.

Maggots, Casters and Bread Punch are all baits that work well for multi-species potential with larger baits such as pellets and corn to target the bigger the larger Bream and Carp.

The canal is also home to predators including Pike, the ocassional Zander as well as the aforementioned Perch providing oppertunities for predator anglers. Dropshotting has grown in popularity and recent years and sees success here when targeting Perch while small to medium sized lures or deadbaits can be used to tempt the larger Pike and Zander.

Overall a scenic, accessible, and productive stretch without being pressured. The mix of species, the variety of features, and the rural setting make it a dependable venue for short evening sessions or more focused match-style fishing.
